Strange murders begin to happen on a Caribbean island. Fulci-Veterans David Warbeck and Janet
Agren lead the search for the titular mutated, killer. A comparatively late Italian production,
“Ratman” is true treasure for Trash-Fans, having everything that makes the Exploitation-Cinema
so enjoyable: a stupid, though charming story, gratuitous nudity, splashes of gore and an
over-the-top Walmart monster. The soundtrack by Stefano Mainetti (“Stage Fright” aka “Deliria”)
attempts to compensate for the weaknesses of the film with an atmospheric-melancholy synthesizer
score.
Demonia (1990), while one of the maestro’s last films is sadly not one of his better outings.
Several scenes are practically lifted from earlier films and Fulci’s sense of atmosphere,
usually spot-on, fails to redeem the incomprehensible plot. In short, archaeologist Liz lands
in Sicily and find and disturbs the final resting place of a group of heretical 16th century
nuns. Bloody revenge and mayhem ensues. Giovanni Cristiani’s score is a bright spot and is
worth a listen – without the accompanying film.
