Where is Takeshi Miike gonna be next? An amazingly prolific filmmaker, Miike has established his formidable reputation on producing gut-churning Yakuza dramas and the occasional odd-ball horror flick. And while he has been more celebrated abroad than in his native Japan, the ever-versatile auteur recently scored two direct hits in his hometown: first with his Ring Redux (Chakushan Ari) and even more successfully with his loving tribute to Japanese Super Hero TV shows, “Zebraman”.
The plot in brief - Being a failure as a teacher and a family man, Shinichi tries to escape everyday live by dressing up as "Zebraman", the superhero. Although the TV series was canceled after only 6 episodes, this does not stop him from acting out his escapist fantasy in a self made zebra-suit. He gets more then he could ever wish for, when his black-and-white dressed alter-ego seems to be the only thing to stand between absolute (green) evil and a happy ending.
The music itself features some terrific “Super-Hero Action” fare, as only the Japanese can write, some lovely lyrical moments and even a Heavy Metal track. No Miike completist (or J-film soundtrack collector) will want to be without this.
