Doppelganger
Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa of "Cure" and "Kairo (The Circuit)" fame. Again he teams up with
acclaimed actor Koji Yakusho with whom he worked on the two films mentioned, as well as "Charisma."
Doppelganger jumps departs from its initial horror premise early on, as Yakusho's portrayal of the
dueling Hayasakis gains comic momentum with every scene they are together in. By the second act, all
of the moody and noir-ish horror elements have given way to dark comedy, and by act three you've
forgotten that this started out as a horror film at all.
Yusuke Hayashi’s score however never lets up in creating a solidly, edgy, noir-tinged mood. Even
including an eerie whistled version of the theme. Brilliantly orchestrated and thematically tight,
this is a superior score to a quirky and individual film.
