MORE creepy Korean teen Girls! What is going ON over there?!?
Truth be told, the “supernatural teen angst” film is a bit of a sure-fire formula in Korea. Nine out of 10 films introduce tragically beautiful protagonists as social outcasts who who seek some manner of psychic revenge upon their tormentors, the idiom, widely called "wangdda" in Korean. Following the success of his previous two horror movies "Nightmare" (2000) and "Phone" (2002), director An Byeonggi again greets horror movie fans with his third shot "Bunshinsaba". The film centers around Yujin (rising starlet Lee Seeun), who has recently and unhappily transferred to a new school. By chanting an evil spell of death, "Bunshinsaba," and scribbling on an "Ouija" board with a pen, she is able to curse her enemies and cause the spellbound to die one after another. The word "Bunshinsaba" has been one of the most familiar incantations among schoolgirls of Korea but, as a taboo, has hardly been dealt with in a movie.
The soundtrack proper has some extremely moody, creepy, electronic scoring but is given a melodic lift through the including of some more traditionally-scored melancholic tracks and some surprisingly high quality dark K-Pop. This one will grow on you… but for heaven’s sake, please don’t torment those Korean schoolgirls!
