A Tale of Two Sisters
Lee Byeong-woo

Take it for us kids, K-Horror IS the next big thing. In recent years, Korean cinema has truly begun to blossom! Breaking free of conservative audience expectations and a generally repressive approach to film making has given new vitality to a young (and sometimes not-so-young) group of creative artists. Ranging from teen sex-comedies to supernatural historic epics, Korean films are finally on the cutting edge.

The current disc features soundtracks to two recent Horror films scored by Byeongwoo Lee: The first, “A Tale of Two Sisters” and the horror omnibus “Three” (AKA Memories).

”A Tale of Two Sisters” benefits from precise direction that goes more for slow chills than quick frights, and a script with some startling twists - a classy entry in the East Asian psycho-horror stakes. DreamWorks recently pounced on stateside remake rights, though we’ve seen enough copies a recent conventions to give us hope that there is some Western theatrical potential as well.

Lee Byeong-woo's music largely underlines the lyrical moments, with the fine effects track left to bolster the scares. Korean title is two female names (literally "Rose Flower, Red Lotus"), referring to a classical Korean folktale that's already been filmed five times between 1924 and 1972.
