Following on the successes of Ringu and Eko, Eko Azarak the New Wave of Japanese
horror was born. Drawing upon traditional themes of vengeance from beyond the grave
and the “kaidan”, a highly effective, creepy and uniquely Japanese take on horror
conventions was established. JUON (2002) is a product of this horror renaissance.
The concept of JUON is a simple one. A curse starts with a person killing out of rage,
then continues to destroy all of those who come into contact with it. In this way it
spreads to other families and grows. Director Shimizu has taken a very simple premise
and managed to make a very engrossing and very frightening film.
The electronic score very effectively captures the atmosphere of tension and menace and
is one of the more successful contemporary Japanese Horror soundtracks.
