Kurosawa’s epic samurai version of King Lear is one of the absolutely MUST SEE cinematic experiences. The acting is terrific, the story compelling and the battle scenes are simply – breathtaking! And then, there’s the score. The late composer Toru Takemitsu has once again supplied Kurosawa with a deeply moving orchestral score. Almost like a Japanese Mahler symphony, Takemitsu’s music is as sweeping as the visuals he accompanies. Very delicate traditional Japanese instrumentation add color and heighten the sense of tragedy. Two discs full of terrific music at a price like THIS? C’mon, it’s a MUST BUY!
