Black Sunday/The Evil Eye
Nicolosi, Roberto
Black Sunday AKA:
La Maschera del Demonio The Mask of Satan Mask of the Demon Revenge of the Vampire
The Evil Eye AKA:
La Ragazza Che Sapeva Troppo The Girl Who Knew Too Much
"The world the Mario Bava and Roberto Nicolosi invented for La Maschera del Demonio was one of great terror and beauty. This unlikely combination became the very foundation of the Italian fantasy cinema that followed. The darkly romantic and atmospheric music collected on this CD acknowledges Maestro Nicolosi as one of the key architects of this special cinematic realm, an undersung artisan who made our movie nightmares more tantalizing and more beautiful."
Tim Lucas, Video Watchdog (from the liner notes).
YESSS! Ooo Baby, THIS is the schiznitz!
Just when we thought that DigitMovies could POSSIBLY fill more impressive gaps in our collections, they go and launch their Mario Bava Movie Soundtracks series. DAYUM! FINALLY, we have with this great CD containing (for the first time!) the atmospheric music from two Bava’s most popular and influential films: the classic horror movie Black Sunday (La Maschera del Demonio) and the film that's widely credited as the first Giallo, The Evil Eye (La Ragazza Che Sapeva Troppo).
Sad to say, that for many years, the only soundtrack than was heard for Black Sunday was the histrionic version composed by Les Baxter for AIP’s dubbed cut. While Baxter used some of Nicolosi’s original ideas, the end result was far from the atmospheric orchestral gothic originally provided. Finally, we get all the existing cues for Bava’s seminal masterpiece, as they were originally intended.
Following their successful collaboration on Black Sunday, Bava and Nicolosi continued to work together on other projects, including the influential “The Evil Eye”. Here, while much of the orchestral writing draws upon the tried-and-true conventions of typical suspense underscore, Nicolosi hits musical gold by including what will become the norm for all subsequent gialli - the Easy/Sleazy lounge sound. Ahh… the joy of discovery!
